Suffragette review

Suffragette is a movie about women’s fight to get the right to vote in England at the beginning of the 20th century.

The main character is Maud Watts. She is married to Sonny Watts and they have a son. She works as a laundress for Mr Taylor, who is scornful and disrespectful towards his employees, especially women. We discover Maud’s working conditions at the laundry, where women earned less than men. They were not protected from their abusive employer.

Progressively, Maud is going to be involved in the Suffragette movement led by Emmeline Pankhurst. The movie focuses on gender inequality and how the Suffragettes protested. For example, they broke windows, chained themselves to railings and set fire to mailboxes. The movie also shows the courage and the determination of these women, who were underestimated but who wanted to be heard. They never gave up and sacrificed a lot for the cause. Many of them went to jail, where they were violently force-fed because they were on hunger strike.

In my opinion, Suffragette is a very inspiring and interesting movie for anyone who wants to know more about history and how women got the right to vote. This movie raises awareness about what women had to sacrifice to promote their cause. What I really liked was the evolution of Maud and her relationship with her son.
