Is sugar that bad ?

Is sugar that bad ? To answer this question, Damon Gameau decides to consume 40 teaspoons a day (160 g) for two months. However, for this experiment he doesn’t eat junk food, only what is considered healthy food such as fruit juice, cereals or canned vegetables. The aim is to show that sugar is hidden everywhere as well as its effect on our body.

Very quickly, Damon ends up with a belly as big as his pregnant wife’s ! His blood tests are bad and he suffers from mood swings. Caught in a vicious circle, alternating fatigue and excitement, he discovers that sugar activates the ‘reward circuit’ (like cocaine) and makes you want to return to it. But the most impressive part remains without doubts his meeting with ‘sugar victims’, especially those of an Aboriginal village in Amata; almost all of them died from diseases such as diabetes or cardiovascular diseases caused by Western junk food.

And what about his trip to the real sugarland : The United States  where he encouters a population living in Kentucky literally feeding on Mountain Dew, a soda which destroys their teeth.

Needless to say that the Australian was eager to end this experience. A shocking but playful film that makes you wonder about the food we eat. Or, in any case convince ourselves not to have another spoon of this bowl of Cheerios you thought innocent…
